COLUMBUS, Miss. – On Tuesday, January 23rd the Columbus Lowndes Chamber of Commerce Education Committee hosted the 2024 Lowndes District Spelling Bee at Annunciation Catholic School. The event was sponsored by the CLCC Education Committee and Edward Jones | Josh Read.
All schools in the area that serve grades 3-8 were invited to participate in the competition.
Each registered school holds a qualifying event and sends two students to district. Schools represented were Annunciation Catholic School, Columbus Municipal School District, Heritage Academy, Lowndes County Homeschoolers, and Lowndes County School District.
The competition ended with Caledonia Middle School 7th grader David Heyman as the champion, New Hope Middle School 6th grader David Robertson as first runner-up and Heritage Academy 7th grader Mira Alnas as 2nd runner up. The championship word was TRINIDADIAN.
Heyman received a trophy and a $100 gift card to Friendly City Books.
Robertson received a trophy and $50 gift card to Friendly City Books.
Alnas received a trophy and a $25 gift card to Friendly City Books.
All participants received a certificate and special coupon to Friendly City Books.
Heyman, Robertson and Alnas will represent the Lowndes District in the state spelling bee online semi-finals on February 1st.
“We are so proud of all the participants,” said Education Committee Chairman Alison Alexander. “Congratulations to all and we commend David, David and Mira on a job well done.”
The Mississippi Spelling Bee will also be held in Columbus on March 1-2.
