American College of Cardiology NCDR Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award recognizes sustained, high level performance in quality of care

Columbus, Miss., Sept. 8, 2023 – Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2023. Baptist Golden Triangle is one of only 262 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Baptist Golden Triangle] has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

To receive the Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, the hospital has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain  ̶   MI Registry for two consecutive years

(2021 and 2022), and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“It is an honor to award Baptist Golden Triangle with the Platinum Performance Award for their valuable national leadership and dedication to meeting comprehensive performance measures in patient care,” said Michael C. Kontos, MD, FACC, chair of the NCDR Chest Pain – MI Registry Steering Subcommittee, and cardiologist at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. “The receipt of this award indicates that Baptist Golden Triangle remains committed to providing top quality, guideline-driven care for heart attack patients. Their success ensures patients are receiving the highest quality cardiovascular care.”

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that more than 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

“This award is another proud achievement for our hospital showing the quality of care of our cardiac services. It reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff who care for some of our most critically ill patients,” said Baptist Golden Triangle Administrator/CEO Rob Coleman. “The consistent implementation of these quality measures requires successful coordination between our cardiovascular team at the hospital and our EMS teams both out in the field and at the hospital and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving the outcomes of heart attack patients,” he added.

Chest Pain  ̶  MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

With 323 beds, Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle is one of the largest regional hospitals affiliated with the Memphis, Tennessee-based Baptist Memorial HealthCare system. More than 100 physicians and surgeons, representing almost every medical specialty, practice at the hospital that offers a full range of comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages.

In addition to the Baptist Cancer Center in Columbus and Starkville, the hospital offers a variety of other services to the community, including Baptist Behavioral Health Care for those with behavioral and mental health problems; an extensive rehabilitation department; a Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy center; a bariatric surgery program; and a 8-bed Geriatric Psychiatric Unit for senior adults suffering from psychological problems.

The hospital is one of three in the Southeast and one of only 20 hospitals in the U.S. to have received Straight As in Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Score since the national organization began grading hospitals in 2012.
