CHAMBER AWARDS $8,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS AS PART OF ANNUAL EDUCATION AWARDS PROGRAM

 

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Education Committee of the Columbus Lowndes Chamber of Commerce is awarding its annual scholarships despite the awards luncheon being canceled due to COVID-19.

 

“The Chamber members had already donated the scholarship funds and the students have already applied prior to COVID-19,” says Lisa James, CLCC President. “The CLCC Education Committee got together and said, the show must go on, even if we cannot celebrate the awards in person, these students have earned it and they are going to college next year despite Coronavirus.”

The following recognitions have been made via mail:

  • Highest GPA for all high schools in Lowndes County                     
  • Outstanding Senior for all high schools in Lowndes County, one Overall Outstanding Senior
  • Corporate Scholarships
  • Teacher of the Year – Elementary (Grades K-5)
  •                                     Middle (Grades 6-8)
  •                                     High School (Grades 9-12)
  • Dixie Butler “True Grit” Award

 

Sponsors for this year’s awards are: Bank of Vernon, BancorpSouth, Carl Hogan Honda, Dixie Butler, Edward Jones Investments, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Financial Concepts, International Paper, Kiwanis Club of Columbus, Mississippi University for Women Foundation, PACCAR, and Sparklight.

 

Students from every school in Lowndes County were encouraged to apply. Over $8,000 in scholarship dollars were raised by the Chamber Membership in an effort to support continuing education in our community.

 

The annual CLCC Education Awards Program is organized by the CLCC Education Committee. The mission of the CLCC Education Committee is to provide support and advocacy towards bettering the education system in our community. The committee believes strong education has a direct correlation to a strong workforce for the business community.

An Overall Outstanding Senior Scholarship given by the Columbus Lowndes Chamber of Commerce and in the amount of $1,000 was awarded to Noel Fisher of Heritage Academy.

 

Dixie Butler “True Grit” Award for Character and Integrity $500

Teachers of the Year received a $50 stipend to supplement their classrooms:
